In 2022, Absolut reached out to VICE to create a branded documentary that highlights the queer community.
I teamed up with a colleague to develop, pitch, produce, and direct what is now known as OUT LOUD.
It’s a 44-minute documentary that highlights three young queer artists and the spaces that helped shape them, showing how music is integral to creating a community for queer people to find ourselves.
We booked New Orleans Bounce icon Big Freedia to host as a way to metaphorically “pass the torch” to these younger artists.
During my time at VICE I produced dozens of magazine style short documentaries, both hosted and unhosted.
I worked on three seasons of VICE’s flagship show on HBO and another three seasons on the new iteration of that show once it moved over to Showtime.
I produced longform documentaries and special reports for VICE TV, VICE Investigates on Hulu and co-directed a feature length documentary for VICE’s partnership with Tubi.
I’m also one of the co-creators and supervising producers for Transnational, a VICE web series on global trans rights.
I love experimenting with non-traditional styles of storytelling and would love to do more of it.
One of my projects I’m most proud of is a multimedia story called Exodus, set in the Marshall Islands.
I produced it as a freelancer with two colleagues for the Groundtruth Project, Mashable, and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
The story is about the long lasting impact American nuclear bomb tests left on the Marshall Islands.
Many of the islands are still contaminated. Now, climate change poses an additional threat.
You can read more about the project and find links to the stories in German and English here.
Like many journalists, I had my start in local news, reporting about community board meetings, cultural events and road accidents.
After college, I freelanced from the Middle East, writing about geopolitics and culture.
During my Master’s program at Columbia University’s Journalism School I was lucky to get a scholarship for the school’s Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism.
There, I specialized in investigative interviewing techniques, data driven research and OSINT information gathering. I also learned how to develop an investigative driven hypothesis.
While much of my work these days is in the longform space, I still produce news features.
Recently, I worked in ARD’s NY bureau, contributing to coverage for German daily news show Tagesschau and the weekly magazine format Tagesspiegel.
